Student Goals and Aspirations

What motivates students? When students think about their future selves, they dream about what they might become, and what they might do in the future. They think about their careers. As an instructor, I always like to remind them of why they are in school in the first place. When they get depressed or challenged, I point out what all of this homework may lead to...a bright future for them! This renews their plan and they proceed to tackle their challenges. I will often ask them to write about their future career goals and how they will reach them. I think that it helps them not only in my class, but encourages them to persevere in their other classes, too. Additionally, they are really putting their plan into play when they write down their strategy to make their future a reality.
